Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes)

Directed by: Damián Szifron
Starring: Darío Grandinetti, María Marull, Mónica Villa, etc.
Release date: December 18, 2015 (Dubai International Film Festival)

Six short stories based on one central theme. We’ve seen such anthologies before. What makes Argentinean film Wild Tales different is that they are all by the same director, and none of the stories or characters intersect. What also makes the movie distinctly different is the sheer quality of the shorts and thus the effectiveness of conveying the central motif. All the stories have an element of violent revenge about them, but more than anything Wild Tales is a deep, dark, satirical social commentary.

Desierto

Directed by: Jonás Cuarón
Starring:  Gael García Bernal, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Alondra Hidalgo , etc.
Release date: December 12, 2015 (Dubai International Film Festival)

Desierto is a single-minded film that efficiently does away with the opening niceties to get to its agenda: a cat-and-mouse game between a hunter and a survivor. As a no-frills thriller, the movie is remarkably well-crafted, not taking any time off from its fist-clenched teeth-grinding narrative. It sets the stakes so high, there is always a sense of imminent danger for *any* character.

Waiting

Directed by: Anu Menon
Starring:   Naseeruddin Shah, , Methalaka Gavin, etc.
Release date: December 12, 2015 (Dubai International Film Festival)

Waiting is a character-driven indie film with realistic and emotional connect, but chooses not to dig too deep below the surface of its characters. Primarily set in a state-of-the-art hospital in Cochin, the movie explores how the loved ones of comatose patients deal with their grief.

Room

Directed by: Lenny Abrahamson
Starring:   Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Sean Bridgers, etc.
Release date: December 11, 2015 (Dubai International Film Festival)

Room takes the premise that is usually seen in a thriller, and makes an exquisite drama about it. It goes beyond showing a series of events, delving deeper and exploring its main characters’ trauma and how they cope. This makes the movie one of the few each year that provide a compelling and enduring experience.

Rattle The Cage (Zinzana)

Directed by: Majid Al Ansari
Starring:  , , , etc.
Release date: December 9, 2015 (Dubai International Film Festival)

Locally produced, Zinzana is an Emarati crime-thriller set in one location, a remote police lock-up “somewhere in Arabia”. The movie is a cat-and-mouse game between Talal, a prisoner, and Dabaan, a psychotic police officer. On either side of the bars, one attempts to manipulate the other towards an end that… doesn’t really fit.
